The project involves organizing the 5th Bioanalytical Nanotechnology School (BANT School), marking its 15th anniversary, in Mozambique.
The initiative aims to strengthen local capacities in diagnostics and bioanalysis through a training school focused on techniques that can be implemented in settings with limited technical and financial resources. The programme will prioritize low-cost methodologies, microscale chemistry, portable instrumentation, chemical sensors and diagnostic tools aligned with the REASSURED principles and the One Health perspective. The initiative builds on the BANT School’s well-established track record and follows a scientific solidarity approach. It seeks to facilitate access to reliable analytical information outside centralized laboratories and to promote the continuity of academic and scientific cooperation with institutions in the partner country. The CRISPER project aims to develop a battery-operated, portable and modular diagnostic platform that integrates CRISPR/Cas technology with electrochemical biosensing. Within a One Health framework, the proposal targets the early detection of nucleic acid biomarkers across human, animal and environmental or food-related matrices, providing a versatile system to quantify DNA and RNA directly at the point of need through three different CRISPR/Cas toolkits based on the specific activation of Cas9, Cas12a and Cas13a. The modular platform combines sample preparation, nucleic acid amplification (using isothermal methods or PCR in a battery-powered thermocycler) and CRISPR-assisted electrochemical readout, converting them into clear ON/OFF electrical signals that are easy to interpret in low-infrastructure settings. EChiLiBRiST – Enhancing Children’s Lives with Biomarkers for Risk Stratification and Triage, is a consortium of 13 institutions from Europe, Africa and North America convened to develop and clinically validate a quantitative point-of-care test for the measurement of severity biomarkers to improve risk stratification of fever syndromes and thus, enhance child survival.
This five year project is funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme. The project consists of two distinct yet complementary workstreams – 1) Design and validation of the device and establishing the exploitation and regulatory pathways; 2) Clinical trials and sub-studies in 3 African countries to assess the impact of the introduction of the device for risk stratification purposes, to enhance outcomes, guide management, and save costs.

The MEMoRiEx proposal aims to develop a rapid and portable test for the early detection and monitoring of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in plasma and risk stratification of patients. The product relies on an in vitro diagnostic (IVD) platform, developed by BioEclosion, featuring a disposable cartridge and a reader. This innovative platform integrates tailor-designed probes to capture brain-derived exosomes from plasma and to detect on their surface the protein BACE-1, an enzyme that cleaves the amyloid precursor protein, leading to the formation of β-amyloid peptides. Insoluble forms of β-amyloid peptides are the primary components of amyloid plaques, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. The platform works with magnetic actuation and an electrochemical biosensor in a portable, battery-operated reader. The long-term vision of the MEMoRiEx consortium relies on an IVD platform capable of stratifying cognitively impaired patients, identifying those who are more at risk of developing AD.
