Opening keynote at I3S 2025. Portable electrochemical biosensing for exosome-based diagnostics

I had the honor of opening the 11th International Symposium on Sensor Science (I3S 2025) in Barcelona Casa de Convalescencia as a keynote speaker. It was a fantastic opportunity to share our latest work with an international community focused on sensor science and to connect with colleagues working across electrochemical, bioanalytical, and implantable sensing technologies.

In my opening keynote, “Portable electrochemical biosensing platforms for exosome in the diagnosis of non-communicable diseases”, I presented our recent progress on point-of-care electrochemical platforms that combine magnetic actuation with sensitive electrochemical readout for exosome analysis in liquid biopsy. I discussed the analytical and practical bottlenecks that still limit routine exosome testing (complex workflows, instrument-heavy characterization, long turnaround times) and how integrated biosensing can help move these measurements closer to real-world clinical and decentralized settings.

The talk covered complementary strategies we have been developing, including immunocapture/electrochemical approaches for exosome-associated biomarkers, functional readouts (such as enzyme activity linked to vesicles), and nucleic-acid workflows enabled by amplification and electrochemical genosensing. I also highlighted how these technologies can be extended to challenging applications such as blood-based detection of neuron-derived extracellular vesicles, with potential relevance for neurodegenerative disease research.

I am grateful to the organizers for the invitation to deliver the opening keynote and to everyone who attended for the engaging discussion. I3S 2025 was an excellent forum to exchange ideas and explore collaborations aimed at accelerating the translation of advanced sensor concepts into deployable diagnostic tools.
